The town of Swindon, located between Reading and Bristol (Great Britain), will deploy a free Wi-Fi network for its inhabitants. This Wiltshire town is to become the first in the UK to provide free wireless internet access to all its residents.

The Wi-Fi mesh will allow the 186 000 people to connect wirelessly, with certain limitations (speed, ...).

The project, funded by private and public funds, will cost more than one million euros, and the municipality says subscribers can sign up for 20Mb upgrades for "significantly less per month than major broadband competitors" after a free three-month trial. .

1 400 access points will be deployed by December 2009 from aQovia until April 2010. Users can subscribe for a 3 months test period, then will be offered a paid subscription.

Digital City UK, the company that was created during this project should deploy similar networks throughout the country.

You are visiting New York. And you want to surf the web. Where will you go? I think the first place to come in mind would be coffee shops located in the Wall Street vecinity. Sure, they are full-equipped to welcome all those WS fatcats.

Well, think twice. The Wall Street Journal reports:

"Amid the economic downturn, there are fewer places in New York to plug in computers. As idle workers fill coffee-shop tables -- nursing a single cup, if that, and surfing the Web for hours -- and as shop owners struggle to stay in business, a decade-old love affair between coffee shops and laptop-wielding customers is fading."

This conflict between squatter and cafe owner has been true since Wi-Fi started to become heavily used as it became a standard feature in laptops or available through a cheap add-on card back in 2002 to 2003. Cafes that had attached an AirPort router to a DSL connection suddenly found themselves a bit at sea.

Please act responsible. Don't stay too long. Order something more than a coffee. Also, be discreet and use a PDA or a IPhone.

Vex Canada, a new enterprise, hopes to deploy 5 000 Wi-Fi hotspots across Canada over the next 18 months, bringing the total to more than 8 500 hotspots.

Access will be free and funded by advertising. Canada is lagging behind compared to other countries in terms of free wireless connectivity. There would be 20 times more hotspots in the United States (according to JiWire).

The parent company of Vex Canada , Vex Corp., is based in Brazil and was established in 2002.

Today, the company has deployed more than 8 000 hotspots (including 70% with access fees) in 35 countries. (via ITWorldCanada)

In Canada, we get screwed by the mobile phone companies and we have less access to free WiFi than most of the industrialized world.

I didn't know that until this morning when I read this post on Twitter by Nathan M. Blackerby:

Indeed, Milwaukee is among the first cities in the United States to provide wireless Internet access in public spaces, modeling the project after an effort in Long Beach, Calif., in which that city's Economic Development Bureau set up wireless Internet zones in a downtown restaurant district.

Pere Marquette Park and Cathedral Square Park have been "freespots," or wireless access points for public use, since June 2003. In April, Milwaukee Public Library expanded that free Internet service to 13 more locations throughout the city.

The system is powered by a DSL line that is connected to a server and distribution antennas on the top of the Zeidler Municipal Building. From there a directional signal is sent to transceivers near both of the parks. Finally, wireless signals are beamed out over the parks for public use.

So, McDonalds has announced that all of its 720 restaurants in Australia will soon offer free WiFi internet access.

McDonald’s has long offered WiFi in Australia, but only on a paid basis, through casual payment, or billed directly to Telstra accounts. McDonalds started offering free WiFi in its United States stores in 2003.

The implementation would seem to be more complicated then simply flicking a switch on the existing WiFi hotspots, with a staged rollout utilizing Telstra’s Next IP network expected to be completed by March 2009.

As published earlier here, Montreal's subway is some kind of black hole for wireless communications. No WiFi capability. Cell phone, almost nothing. Five stations offer cell phone connections: Berri-UQAM, St-Laurent, Place-des-Arts, McGill and Peel. If you are lucky, there is some weak signal in Lionel-Groulx, Longueuil and Champs-de-Mars.

The big news is that until three years ago only Bell Mobilite was available. Now, Rogers and Telus' users can call too.

Now, STM wants to wait a few more months to set up their network so we can access the outside world through our cell phones. But, nothing about WiFi.

When the service slows down or is interrupted, I will still have to find a public phone to call my school to warn them that I will be late. The problem is that they took out most of the public phones.
